Château Rouzaud

Château Rouzaud is a stunning private estate located in Ariège, just 45 minutes south of Toulouse. Fully restored by Sir Richard and Lady Brooke, it features an elegant château, two guesthouses, and a charming 12th-century chapel, all set within a perfectly maintained 6-hectare landscaped park.

This exceptional location offers a 360° view of the Ariège countryside, as well as a unique atmosphere that is at once luxurious, peaceful, and warm. Ideal for both summer and winter stays, Rouzaud can accommodate up to 14 people for a family vacation, a weekend with friends, or a friendly gathering in a completely private setting.

The Château Rouzaud estate is centered around a magnificent 19th-century château, recognizable by its elegant round towers. Formerly a hunting lodge, it is connected to an older main building dating from the 16th century, forming a harmonious architectural ensemble steeped in history. Two terraces, facing south and north, offer the opportunity to enjoy meals outdoors throughout the day, depending on the light and the season.

In the park, the former sheepfold and pigsty have been transformed into two charming guesthouses, beautifully renovated and seamlessly integrated into their natural surroundings. A delightful 12th-century chapel, located near a pond covered with water lilies, completes this peaceful setting. The carefully landscaped gardens are dotted with elegant sculptures by David William Ellis, creating a subtle dialogue between nature and art.

For relaxation and recreation, the estate features a beautiful swimming pool with a pool house, a tennis court, and a zip line that winds through the holm oak forest, offering moments of fun and freedom in a pristine setting.

The castle’s large living room runs the length of the building, opening onto the two furnished terraces to the south and north. It connects to a bar located in one of the round towers. Decorated in a very “British” style, it is spacious, comfortable, and inviting. Other, more intimate lounges are available in the adjoining 16th-century farmhouse and in the guesthouses.

A large room featuring a dance floor and a bar opens onto a covered terrace upstairs. A pool table and a library offer additional opportunities to enjoy quality time together. As the sole guests during your stay, you can plan your time however you like, with your family and friends.

All the rooms have their own private bathrooms and, in many cases, walk-in closets. They have been beautifully renovated by Lady Brooke in a comfortable and warm British style. Filled with antique furniture, paintings, and works of art, they reflect the taste of the English aristocracy. Lady Lucy Brooke was assisted by interior designer Fiona Goodheart in decorating all of the rooms. The rooms blend perfectly with the outdoor spaces. All rooms offer a splendid view of the rolling countryside, where Olivier and Marielle’s sheep and goats—the “Cathar Shepherds”—graze.

The pool house is a charming home decorated with great refinement and comfort. It is located between the pool and the castle. It features a living room on the ground floor with a beautiful fireplace, a bedroom on the mezzanine with a bathroom, and a kitchen.

The sheepfold is a tiny little house near the tennis court—a very “cozy” studio for a couple who value their privacy. A shower room and a small kitchen provide privacy when needed.

A history dating back centuries:

Perched on the hillside, the Château du Rouzaud offers an exceptional 360° panoramic view of the Ariège countryside and the surrounding mountains. This remarkable landscape inspired the construction of the first chapel as early as the 12th century. At that time, a Count of Foix—probably Roger II—returned from Syria after participating in the First Crusade (1096–1099), notably in the city ofApamea. This legendary origin is said to have given its name to Pamiers, the town closest to the castle.

A century later, Jacques Fournier—born in Saverdun around 1285 and the future Pope Benedict XII—may have found solace in this very chapel. As bishop of Pamiers between 1317 and 1326, he presided over the Inquisition tribunal tasked with hunting down the Albigensian heretics hiding in the surrounding forests.

In 1521, a plague epidemic struck the town of Pamiers. A large portion of the population fled the city, which may explain why the first farmhouse was built on the Rouzaud site at that time. In the 19th century, it was converted into a hunting lodge, the precursor to the current residence.

A Contemporary Renaissance

After lying dormant for several years, the property was purchased in 1998 by Sir Richard and Lady Lucy Brooke, who were captivated by the beauty of the place and its unique potential. They then undertook a complete restoration, with the goal of transforming the estate into a charming haven with a refined aesthetic.

The lake was dredged and restored. A large terrace was built to connect the castle to the former farm buildings, which were also restored. For the interiors, Lady Lucy Brooke enlisted the help of interior designer Fiona Goodhart, who created warm and elegant spaces with an air of simplicity. The walls are adorned with a remarkable collection of family portraits dating back to the 15th century, bearing witness to the intimate history of the place.

Sir Richard Brooke, an art enthusiast, transformed the gardens into a veritable open-air gallery. He installed a series of monumental bronze sculptures by David Williams in the clearings and woodlands, thereby creating an ongoing dialogue between nature and contemporary art. The park, lawns, and paths have been meticulously landscaped, giving the Château du Rouzaud its current sense of harmony.

Today, this unique place combines history, art, and serenity in an exceptional natural setting. It has become an inspiring haven, where the past and contemporary creativity coexist elegantly.
