The first notable owner of Montfleury was the Lord of La Guesle, a favorite of Queen Catherine de’ Medici, who nicknamed this region the “Tuscany of Auvergne” because it reminded her so much of her homeland. Upon his death in 1561, the estate passed to the d’Aymard family, then to the du Bost family. The du Bost family retained ownership until Michel du Bost de Codegnat, who, having no descendants, donated it in 1722 to Pierre and Marie-Anne Amariton, on the condition that they adopt the name and coat of arms of the du Bost family.
Montfleury is historically unique in that it was regularly passed down from uncle to nephew. During the Revolution, like the other properties of émigrés, the estate was seized and its furnishings sold at auction in the courtyard. Jean-Baptiste-Louis Amariton de Montfleury reclaimed his estate upon his return from exile and commissioned the early 19th-century additions, without altering the original character of the complex. Having no children of his own, he adopted his grandnephew Louis de Vinols, to whom he bequeathed his name, his title, and all his possessions.
Today, Montfleury is writing a new chapter in its history—that of an open, vibrant estate, faithful to the spirit of a grand family home that has always defined it.
The Château de Montfleury is located in the Puy-de-Dôme, Auvergne.
