The region

Toulouse, Carcassonne, the Périgord: the great South-West

This is our best-stocked region, and the most varied. Around Toulouse, under an hour away: Château de Longpré, built for weddings of 150; Château de Coulom, a 17th-century manor in the Lauragais; Château de Riveneuve at Pamiers, 30 beds and 120 guests; Château de Malvignol between Albi and Castres; Château Rouzaud in the Ariège. Towards Carcassonne, Château La Commanderie, a 13th-century Cathar fortress, and Château de Goudourville, 11th-century, in 25 hectares. To the north, Château de Roussillon, a medieval fortress near Cahors, and Château du Trioulou in the Aveyron. In the Dordogne, Château de La Meynardie in the heart of the Périgord Vert, Château de Garraube near Bergerac. And among the vines: Pitray at Saint-Émilion, Briat in Armagnac, Les Bloys at the gates of Bordeaux, Pontié and its 100 hectares.

All are rented for your exclusive use: the château, estate or manor house whole. The owners welcome you, then leave you the place — drawing rooms, kitchen, grounds, pool. That is the difference from a hotel or a large holiday rental, and it is why the South-West is our most requested region for weddings: the light, the table, and guests who sleep on site.

All around, everything travellers look for here: Toulouse and the Capitole, the walled city of Carcassonne, Albi and its cathedral, Cahors and the Pont Valentré, Sarlat, Lascaux and the Vézère valley, Rocamadour, Saint-Émilion, the Canal du Midi, the bastides of the Lauragais, the Ariège Pyrenees and Montségur. From 12 to 30 beds, up to 250 guests for a reception.

Practical guide

Planning your stay in the South-West

When to come

May, June and September for weddings: gentle heat, long evenings. July and August for holidays — nearly all have a pool. Autumn in the Périgord and around Cahors, with the harvest and the truffle markets from December. Spring for the snow-capped Pyrenees seen from the plain.

Getting there

Toulouse-Blagnac airport serves all of Europe; the TGV takes 4 h 15 from Paris. Bordeaux Saint-Jean, 2 h from Paris, for the Dordogne and the Bordeaux area, then 1 h to 1 h 30 by car. Bergerac and Carcassonne have airports with UK flights. A car is essential.

Around

Toulouse, Carcassonne, Albi, Cahors, Sarlat and Lascaux, Rocamadour, Saint-Émilion, the Canal du Midi, Cordes-sur-Ciel, Montségur and the Pyrenees.
