Heritage

The History of the Castle

16th century

La Meynardie is a late 16th-century, early 17th-century castle in the Louis XIII style, built during the reign of Henry IV or Louis XIII. “Its stately appearance comes from an unbroken row of machicolations, stone dormer windows with pediments, large slate-roofed attics, and two turrets on the roof,” according to Baron de Verneilh’s description in 1873. The estate also included the Meynardie forge, located on the Valouze River, which in the 19th century produced more than 500 quintals of iron. It belonged to the Croizant and Arlot de Frugie families, then passed through successive marriages to the Curmond de la Meynardie family, the Ribeyreix family (lords of La Meynardie), and finally to the Count of Villoutreys; most of them are buried in the castle’s chapel.
During the Revolution, the Count of Villoutreys emigrated, and the castle was auctioned off as national property; it was purchased by the family of master blacksmiths Texier, and later by the de la Salle family. Mr. Sohier then purchased the castle—which was in a state of disrepair—for his wife (Marshal Bazaine’s niece) in 1883 and carried out extensive interior and exterior renovations. In particular, he created the French-style park and built magnificent stables for his hunting parties.
La Meynardie was finally purchased in 1941 by the grandparents of the current owners: three sisters. The château served as a headquarters for the Alsos Mission during the war. This American mission, under the command of Colonel Boris Pash, established its base at La Meynardie, making it the operational center for the region south of the Loire. Colonel Pash wrote a book about it, *The Alsos Mission*, in which he speaks at length about La Meynardie as an “impressive old castle.”
