Heritage

The History of the Castle

11th Century

The name of this castle—“Gothorum Villa,” “Godorvilla,” and “Goudourville”—dates back to the Goths, who settled in the Toulouse region in the 5th century. On this estate, acquired in 1081, the powerful Gasques family built a castle to guard the borders between the Kingdom of France and the English. This family, which remained there for 300 years, established the region’s customs and traditions.
During the Renaissance, it belonged to a wealthy family from the Agen region, the Lustracs, who were connected to the court of King Henry II, Queen Catherine de’ Medici, and King Henry IV. Many of these visitors stayed at the Château de Goudourville to settle matters of state or matters of the heart. The Lustrac family transformed the château, adding mullioned windows, a wide central stone spiral staircase, and painted coffered ceilings…
During the Fronde, in January 1652, the troops of the Prince of Condé, leader of the Protestants, pursued by royal forces, took refuge in the Château de Goudourville. The castle was besieged and ultimately overrun. The Fronde rebels were sentenced to pay a heavy ransom, and the local population, forced to bear the cost of maintaining the troops, was ruined. The troops, who occupied the castle until November, vandalized and ransacked it. To curb the arrogance and power of the great feudal lords, Mazarin ordered that the towers of many castles be reduced in size and their military installations dismantled. The three towers of the Château de Goudourville were partially razed, and their military structures destroyed. Today, only the machicolations above the moat remain.
In the 18th century, a Toulouse city councilor, Louis de Berdolle, acquired the Château de Goudourville, restored it, and embellished it in the style of the time: the arrowslits and underground passages were sealed off; large French-style windows were added; a beautiful chestnut-wood roof structure was built above the flat, crenellated roofs; and a large esplanade was created on the former ramparts…
In the 20th century, the Tocqueville family once again carried out major renovation work there and had the castle designated as a Historic Monument.
Today, Jean-Christophe and Geneviève—who are in love with this place rich in history and unique stories—are the ones who run it. They are happy to open it up to other families for moments of joy, togetherness, and wonderful celebrations, with complete exclusivity. The keys to the castle are yours!
