Heritage

The History of the Castle

14th century

“Le Trioulou”—which means “clover” in the Occitan language—did not always have this 19th-century facade. As the Marquis de Valady writes in his book *Les châteaux de l’ancien Rouergue*, “Two very beautiful rooms— [he is referring to the dining room and the large gray parlor]—remarkable for the height of their vaults and the bold elegance of the ribs in one of them, speak volumes about the building’s age.” As early as the 14th century, there is mention of a “Trioulou estate,” belonging to Pierre de Trioulou, then to his son Hugues de Trioulou. At the beginning of the 17th century, Le Trioulou passed into the hands of a family from Villefranche-de-Rouergue, the Hérails, who, in 1629, took in the nuns of Saint Ursula there while a plague epidemic was raging in the town. Le Trioulou was then passed down through the female line to the Verminac family. Later, in 1705, it passed to the Colonges family through the marriage of Angélique de Verminac to her neighbor Alexis-Dauphin de Colonges, Lord of Cénac.

In the early 19th century, Le Trioulou was sold to Armand Constans, who then sold it to the Maruéjouls in 1877. It was Émile Maruéjouls, a representative from Aveyron and Minister of Transportation under the Third Republic, and his son Pierre Maruéjouls, who served as an embassy attaché and later as minister plenipotentiary, who “so successfully transformed and embellished this historic residence.” The major renovations to Le Trioulou were carried out under the direction of Paul Gout (1852–1923), a student of Viollet-le-Duc and an architect originally from Villefranche-de-Rouergue. Pierre Maruéjouls passed the château on to his nephew Pierre Nadal, who in turn sold it in the 1980s to the Lugan family, before, in 2015, Frédéric and Marie-Laurence Beutter, who were looking for a large family home to accommodate their seven children, purchased it.

Our week at the Chateau was fantastic! We loved the restoration. It is a very dignified building, with fascinating details everywhere we looked.
We felt honored to 'live in history'. Each evening we gathered in the beautiful drawing room to discuss history, followed by an elegant dinner, lit by candelabras. The bedrooms were comfortable and gracious, with views onto the lovely grounds. The kitchen was well stocked, and easy to prepare feasts in!
Madame Bezamet, the housekeeper was a treasure! She was very helpful, kind and thoughtful.

I highly recommend it!

Things to Do in the Area

A stay at Château du Trioulou is the perfect opportunity to explore Aveyron, one of the most authentic and unspoiled areas of the former Midi Pyrénées region, now part of Occitanie. In the immediate surroundings, the landscapes of the Rouergue reveal a succession of medieval villages, fortified bastides and remarkable natural sites.

Among the must see destinations, the royal bastide of Villefranche de Rouergue and its rich heritage lead the way to Najac, Villeneuve d’Aveyron and Capdenac, all shaped by medieval history and the pilgrimage routes to Saint Jacques de Compostelle. Further afield, the village of Conques, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, captivates visitors with the Abbey of Sainte Foy and its pilgrims’ bridge overlooking the Dourdou River.

Lovers of architecture and spirituality will also enjoy visiting the fortified Abbey of Loc Dieu or the Chartreuse Saint Sauveur, true gems of Aveyron’s heritage.

A wide range of outdoor and sporting activities is available nearby, including hiking, tree top adventure courses, via ferrata, canyoning, caving, horse riding, fishing and golf at the Totche course in Villefranche de Rouergue.

Between villages of art and history, wild landscapes and outdoor adventures, Trioulou is an ideal base from which to explore all the many facets of Aveyron.
