In the heart of the Pays-de-la-Loire region, less than 2 hours from Paris, nestled within a 400-hectare national forest, stands the proud silhouette of the Château de Montgoger, a testament to a rich and eventful history. Today, the magnificent 18th-century orangery, covering an area of 1,200 m², welcomes you for vacations or weekend getaways. The ruins of the main castle lend the estate an air of mystery, a testament to a bygone grandeur that will capture your imagination.
Explore the estate
The castle is set in a 17-hectare park with century-old trees, ensuring complete privacy for families. Only the castle ruins are visible from the outside; the rest of the property lies deep within the forest. The property has private access to the adjacent national forest, spanning more than 400 hectares, offering numerous opportunities for walks. Since the main body of the castle burned down at the end of the 19th century, the primary residence is now the “orangery,” a spacious building that has replaced the castle as a venue for receptions and accommodations. It covers 1,200 m², of which 1,000 m² are available for rent. A swimming pool is located immediately adjacent to the orangery.
Lounges and Reception Rooms
The large windows of the orangery open onto a long, south-facing terrace—a pleasant living space, perfect for late dinners outdoors. On the ground floor, you’ll find a 350 m² space consisting of a suite of three large living rooms, an entry hall, and a hallway. In addition, there are four small living rooms (totaling 120 m²), some of which can be converted into bedrooms, as well as a kitchen and a reception area. The kitchen is fully equipped.

The History of the Castle
18th centuryDespite the castle’s de-crenellated towers and lime-washed walls, a rich and long history has unfolded here, blending royal visits and hunting parties, feats of arms, and dramatic events. Montgoger’s roots stretch back more than 850 years: many famous figures in the history of Touraine have been linked to the castle’s history, from the lords of Sainte-Maure to the Dukes of Choiseul, including the Marquises of Beauvau. Among the lords of Montgoger were a captain under Du Guesclin and a Minister of Finance, a bishop, a minister under Louis XV, and a French ambassador—as well as the assassin of the Duke of Guise! The castle’s walls have also witnessed the visits of Joan of Arc, Louis XI, and Henry IV. The sumptuous castle burned down in 1883. The Orangery, built in 1768, was expanded with a Neo-Louis XV-style projection between its two L-shaped pavilions, and in 1884, an additional wing in a curious Anglo-Norman style was added to its rear facade. The château was partially restored, then occupied by the Germans during World War II, and caught fire once again—this time during a grand reception.
Things to Do in the Area

- Gastronomic discovery: the surrounding vineyards offer a real wine route, in Chinonais, but also in the region of Bourgueil, Saumur or Vouvray. The region has its own specialties, such as Sainte-Maure cheese.
