History

Gothorum Villa, Goudourvilla and Goudourville are names bestowed onto the Castle by the Goths following their settlement in the Toulouse region, starting from the 5th century. Goudourville Castle was constructed in 1081 by a powerful family in the area, the Gasques, in order to keep watch on the border between the kingdom of France and the Angles. This family owned the domain for 300 years and thus established the ways and customs for the surrounded area.
During the Renaissance, the Caste was owned by a rich family from the Agenais area, the Lustrac family. They were linked to the court of King Henry the 3rd, King Henry the 4th and Queen Catherine of Medicis, who came to sort out court or love affairs.
The Lustrac transformed the Castle with mullioned windows, a large central spiral staircase and French style ceilings.
In January 1652 during the Fronde, the troops of the Prince of Condé, a protestant leader, were pursued by royal troops, and so they took refuge in the Castle of Goudourville. The Castle was besieged and after two months, it was taken over. The rebels taken prisoner were condemned to pay a hefty ransom, and the population was ruined by the upkeep of the troops.
The royal troops, who occupied the castle, pillaged and damaged it. In order to undercut the arrogance and power of the great feudal lords, Mazarin ordered them to diminish the size of many castle towers and dismantle the military installations. The three towers of the Goudourville castle were partially downsized and its military installations were destroyed. Nowadays all that remains are the machicolations above the moat.
In the 18th century, Louis of Berdolle, a governor of Toulouse, acquired Goudourville castle. Berdolle restored and embellished it according the tastes of the time : arrow slits and underground tunnels were filled in, tall French style windows were installed, a magnificent chestnut framework was built on top of the flat roof battlements and a grand terrace was installed on the former ramparts.
During the 20tth century, the Tocqueville family began further renovation work and the Castle was listed as a French Historical Monument.
Nowadays, Jean-Christophe and Geneviève, great lovers of this place which is rich in history, are pleased to open the doors to other families for their own moments of joy, sharing and exceptional celebrations, in perfect intimacy. The keys to the Castle are yours !
