Each era has left its mark on the stone\u2014from the 11th-century medieval tower to the 18th-century classical fa\u00e7ade, including the Renaissance spiral staircase and the ceilings painted by Italian artists in the early 19th century. <\/p>\n\n

Ancient Origins<\/h3>\n

Long before the castle was built, the site was already inhabited. The Gardon Valley, near the Roman city of N\u00eemes and the Pont du Gard, had been inhabited since ancient times. In the 5th century, the Gallo-Roman writer Sidonius Apollinaris mentions a place named Colleivacum<\/em> \u2014which some historians believe is related to Collias.
