The castle has been the property of the marquis du Rouret’s family for the last 4 centuries, it nowadays belongs to the last Puget, of the family Hughes Baron de Geoffroy, marquis du Rouret. His wife Florence and his 5 daughters have lovingly renovated with style this mansion respecting all its distinctive features and adding their own personal touch of great artistic sensitivity. The domain is made of three different areas: the castle with its garden and court, the guests house on the terrace with a splendid view on the French riviera from Italy to Var district, and the orchard with the swimming pool and the tennis court.

Principal living and reception rooms

Successfully combining provencal style (all in simplicity and sobriety) and the Italian style, more exuberant, the formal rooms are displayed on the ground floor of the castle, with a vast and central staircase leading to upper floors. A veranda acting as an extension of the beautiful dining room opens on the garden, the convenient kitchen has nevertheless kept the good old days charm. The lounges leading into lounges present an unique setting for your receptions. Your guests will love posing informal wear in the “salon des portraits” and they will profit by the Chinese lounge to have a last drink in a more convivial atmosphere.

History

An act from the 2nd July 1217 indicates that Châteauneuf belongs to Oberto, Conte de  Vintimille. French Provence was at the time, supporting the city of Vintimille against Genovese people and Conte de Provence. In 1536, Emperor Charles Quint is entering Provence, after he escapes an attack in l’Estérel, he takes retaliatory measures ordering the looting and destruction of the defenses with a severely judged inhumanity. Both Opio castles and Châteaneuf  remains in ruins after that. A few years later, life is slowly coming back in the village and in spite of the destruction of the castle, the village of Châteauneuf kept a medieval area with high houses built on the edge of the rock with passages and traces of bulwark still visible today. Development of the culture of the grape vines, olive trees and fig trees enabled a production in excess which was actively traded to the genovese people both from the port of Antibes and the port of Cannes. Saffron business was also very profitable. The chateau as you can see it today, was built on the ruins of the old one by Baron du Puget. The old foundations have been converted in cellars and you can still see traces of the old cadastral chapel. This classic style chateau offers all the architectures specifications of the early Seventeenth century : simplicity, sobriety and perfect knowledge of the balance of the masses with perfect proportions. The three floors edifice extends with a double facade, identical both from court side and garden side. The main entrance located in the middle of the edifice is decorated with an elegant portico made of tuscan tops pilaters holding a cornice decorated with fire pots. Garden side opens up with an identical gate. State rooms occupy the main area with a large scale taking to the upstairs floors.

Activities around

Should there be a land blessed by the gods, this would be the French Riviera : its sunny climate lasts almost all year round with 300 days of sun per year. Not surprinsigly a lot of artists have chosen the area for its unparalleled light and for its magnificent landscapes where mountain flows into the sea. Thanks to artists such as Renoir, Fragonard, Bonnard, Matisse, Picasso, Nicolas de Staels, Chagal, Cocteau…they made the region opulent artistically and culturally.

The French Riviera is also land of contrasts : « bling-bling » showy luxury goes around with genuine lifestyle. We have all heard about Cannes’ boisterous luxury, its Croisette and its famous Film Festival (2ndworld’s most large media covered event), Monaco and its Formula 1 Grand Prix, Saint Tropez nightlife and luxury shopping. Behind the glitter scene, French Riviera is also a land of genuine and charming villages : Up on the hills you can find villages such as Châteauneuf de Grasse, Mougins, Gourdon, Eze, les Hauts de Cagnes, Saint Paul de Vence. Or  lifefull old towns, reminding us of Italian villages : the flower market in the old town of Nice, colorfull Cannes market place in Forville, narrow streets of the old Grasse, the everlasting city of perfume where you can still visit the old perfume factories.

Less known are the areas of magnificent and unspoiled nature, still yet to be discovered both on the seaside or in the hills. For example, beaches remote from the touristic tours, those of the « Plages du Midi » in Cannes, or those in La Darse in Villefranche sur Mer, Cap Ferrat small bays along the coastal path, Lerins Islands off Cannes, Sainte Marguerite Island and Saint Honorat island. And of course, the wide and wild spaces that the Alps next door offer us : Valberg, Auron, Isola, heaven for ski lovers and hikers.

Cultural visits abound in the region, here are a few ideas : Fragonard perfume’s museums or the one about the Provence Life in Grasse, Palais Lascaris museum in Nice old town, Matisse museum in Cimiez arenas, Chagal and Cheret Museums, MAMAC in Nice, Renoir museum in Cagnes-Sur-Mer, Fondation Maeght in Saint Paul de Vence,Bonnard museum in Le Cannet, Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild in Cap Ferrat and antique greek style Villa Kerylos in Beaulieu, Oceanographic museum in Monaco...
