Château de Villers-en-Ouche

As soon as you pass through the gates of Villers-en-Ouche you feel the magic of the castle and its gardens. A majestic alley of centuries-old lime and beech trees forms an immense cathedral like green arch.  At the end of this canopy you will glimpse the beautiful façade of the 17th century château. In the peace and quiet of the grounds of the chateau, nature surrounds you, leaving the world behind. With friends and family in your exclusive chateau, your holiday truly begins. The classical gardens and forest have been lovingly cared for by the present owners. In the forest you can dine by candlelit in the magical Trianon. Truly French, eating late into the night in a small building constructed purely to enjoy the quiet of the forest, summer couldn't be better here. Between Paris (only 1 hour and 45 minutes) and the sea at Cabourg or Deaville just an hour away, the delights of Normandy in the Pays d’Ouche are at your fingertips. The chateau comfortably sleeps 24 and can host small receptions for 50. Plan your next holiday with family or friends, to discover this beautiful area.

History

The village and chateau ‘Villiers’ derived their name from a large villa that existed during Roman times in the general location of the current chateau. In the middle ages, the property was transformed into a stronghold. The 16th century half-timbered dovecote, with its flat tile roof, is an artifact from this part of its history. During those days, Villiers was a “maison des champs” surrounded by a 670 hectare park to the East of the village. In 1610 a castle was built by the family Baurepaire. The great oak staircase goes back to the XVII th century and the other rooms were renovated in King Louis XVI times. In the XVIII th century an English style park was built in which a small temple was constructed, so called the “Fabrique” or “Trianon” a romantic reference to princess Marie-Antoinette’s farm in Versailles. A special area for harvest feast dances was also added to the English style park.

Unlike so many other castles, the chateau did not suffer damage during the French revolution. During the Second World War, the castle became the “kommandatur” of the German Wehrmacht before they were expelled by the British army, which then led it to a short occupation by the US army. In addition to the majority of the chateau’s extensive renovations, the current owners are also working to repair the woods which were damaged by a huge storm in 2002.

As of 2004, the chateau, the outbuildings, the park and the gardens have been as a whole registered in the “Inventaire supplémentaire des Monuments Historiques”; and the very rare XVIIIth century wallpapers classified  in the “MH” list for their historic outstanding importance.

Activities around

The Pays d’Ouche has been inhabited since the Neolithic times, there still remain many menhirs and dolmens to be seen, for example the dolmen de Rugles 20 minutes from the castle. Then came the Celts, the Romans, the Vikings…the Orne district is an ideal getaway for many touristic attractions, among which is the Mont Saint Michel, the castles of the Loire, and the D-Day in June 1944. The romantic landscape and the charm of the country account for a long tradition of writers and poets, such as Guillaume de Conches in the middle ages, Jean Boivin de Villeneuve in the XVII th century… and more recently, Jean de la Varende who wrote many short stories originating in the Pays d’Ouche. The Pays d’Ouche provides a lot of cultural, sports opportunities. It is a region well known to fishermen with its fish-bearing rivers, lakes and streams. Many touristic villages are worth visiting nearby, as for example “L’Aigle” with its beautiful brick and stone houses and its famous market, or Bagnoles, a city with a peculiar and unique “Belle Epoque” style. Not far away, the chateau du Champ de Bataille has been recently bought and renovated by the architect and stylist Jacques Garcia (famous for redesigning la Mamounia in Marrakech, the Royal Monceau and the Fouquet’s in Paris, the NoMad in New York or the Danieli Hotel in Venice). Next to the property of Villers-en-Ouche, the manege “le Manoir” offers equestrian activities such as horse riding and pony club with an excellent restaurant and a rural cottage for 10 people. And 3 kms from the château, there is a municipal tennis facility.
