Chateau de Sédaiges

The impressive medieval castle of Sédaiges rises up in Cantal, in the heart of the Auvergne region, one of the most charming parts of central France. Existing but modified over 8 centuries, the Sedaiges castle is an unique example of forgotten architecture. The castle has been the property of the same family for 28 generations, which accounts for the numerous everyday objects old and new you will find in the castle. Its 14 cosy bedrooms can host comfortably 15 persons. The park with its swimming pool and its remarkable trees is an exceptional location for your holiday, wedding, birthday or any big family event. Next to the castle, a 1,900 square feet reception hall can accommodate up to 160 people.

History

A history dating back eight centuries that is full of twists and turns: As early as 1230, Sédaiges was already the seat of a seigniorial court: at that time, Pierre de Sédaiges was a gentleman at the court of Rodez. The ‘den’ comprised a crenellated keep attached to a main building and opened onto a fortified inner court, flanked on three corners by small towers with pepper pot roofs. A fifth tower inside the enclosure provides access to all floors.
In 1408 the château was almost ruined by the Hundred Years War. It was rebuilt, according to the original plans, in 1456 for a wedding with the Caissac family.
From 1750, when the Bérals took it over from the Caissacs, enlarged windows, alcoves and panelling made Sédaiges a more comfortable residence. It looks just like it does in the photographs taken in 1850.

From 1860, the château was modified from top to bottom under the influence of the famous architect, Violet le Duc: a third floor covered the open courtyard; three towers were raised to the height of the original keep; the lauze (stone) tiles were replaced by slate; and Sédaiges took on its present-day appearance – that of the most splendid example of Neo-Gothic architecture in Haute-Auvergne.
The château is listed in the “Inventaire Supplémentaire des Monuments Historiques” (Supplemental inventory of historic monuments) and it is still occupied by the descendants of the Sédaiges (now the 28th generation).

Activities around

The silhouette of the Château de Sédaiges stands proudly on the edge of the charming village of Marmanhac, 15 km north of Aurillac, in the heart of the Auvergne.

This region was the beacon of medieval civilisation. Its wealth of châteaux bears testament to this: Château d’Anjony, Château d’Auzers, Château du Cambon, Château de Conros, Château de Messilhac, etc.

The Auvergne is today a land of large spaces, now more open yet still preserved, and an extraordinary resource of natural and architectural beauty that you can discover by foot, on horseback, by bike or by car. France’s largest regional nature reserve is the Volcans d’Auvergne nature reserve, which covers 400,000 hectares around Riom-ès-Montagnes. From the top of Le Puy Mary, you can take in the sheer size of Europe’s biggest volcanic chain, the Monts du Cantal. Twelve glacial valleys radiate out in a star shape, and when passing the Pas de Peyrol you can admire the Cirque du Falgoux.
If you prefer forest walks, head into the forêt de Tronçais. It covers 10,000 ha from the Berry to the Bourbonnais provinces. Renowned for its well-respected oaks, it used to supply a large proportion of the French fleet. Under their foliage, fungi grow in great quantities and wildlife aficionados will always manage to spot game or a crested grebe on Pirot lake.
If you fancy immersing yourself in wild and colorful waterside surroundings lodged between sheer rock faces, take the Gorges de la Jordanne discovery trail.
